With a population of almost 900,000, modern Saratov is one of the biggest towns in the Povolzhie region. It has well-developed industrial, commercial, and cultural sectors.
The contacts between the two towns started in mid-1990s when a formal agreement was signed.
Each year, the two sister cities organize a number of events, one of which is the European pop-rock festival Sarandev. The partnership also involves summer holidays for talented young people in the resorts around Dobrich.
